The White Slave: A Story of Life in Virginia, etc. or Memoirs of a Fugitive, a Story of Slave Life in Virginia, etc., by R. Hildreth, Esq. London: Ingram, Coke, & Co., 1852. First English Illustrated edition with eight engravings.  Three-quarter dark brown morocco leather (bound by W. Worsfold, London).  Very Good.  Some wear and chipping at the head and tail of the backstrip, wear along the length of the joint; minor scattered foxing after page 222 and minor bumping on four corners.  12 mo - 6¾- 7¾” tall. 302 pp.  Has a penciled note opposite frontispiece that says, ”Note date at bottom of Spine of this book. Today is 16th February 1954. David E. Glayzer.”  First printed under title:  The Slave; or, Memoirs of Archy Moore (Boston, 1836); brought up to date and revised in 1852 to capitalize on the popularity of Uncle Tom’s Cabin.  Printed on one of the front pages:  Uniform with this Work is published, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe. Hildreth’s mother was a slave, his father a Virginia planter.  Rare.
