The format is straightforward and well
organized...Two very helpful appendices follow the 571 pages of
entries on individual artists... Also, the foreword and
introduction place the artists in historical context.
Although this volume is not illustrated, it is still an
indispensable resource for anyone remotely interested in this
area of study and collecting, as even individuals familiar with
Texas art will find considerable new material between its
covers.

The strength of this volume lies in its depth and
breadth. I strongly recommend it, especially to art reference
collections in the Southeast and Southwest and collections with
strengths in American art.

Highly
recommended for libraries in the Southwest and academic libraries
supporting extensive art programs.

Texas Painters,
Sculptors & Graphic Artists
is a superbly researched and written regional American artist
dictionary--one of the best I've ever reviewed.
I highly recommend it.

This book was fourteen years in the making and Books
of the Southwest recommends this achievement to its readers.
The price is not prohibitive if one considers the quality of the
content and the workmanship.

Texas libraries which take seriously their role as a reference agency
will certainly want to own a copy.

The extensive bibliography could stand alone as a good Texas art
bibliography.

Texas Painters, Sculptors
& Graphic Artists is a comprehensive and well-designed
guide to the mosaic of Texas art prior to World War II. It
should be an essential addition to any reference library.

With a forward by
Ron Tyler and a very interesting introduction about art history and art
appreciation historically in Texas, the book is a valuable addition to
any library, art, history or Texana. It is also an invaluable
guide for the beginning Texas art collector. In short, it is a
masterpiece.

Texas
Painters, Sculptors & Graphic Artists by John and Deborah Powers –
a book that experts refer to simply as “Powers” – was published in
2000 and became a bible to collectors.
“Listed” artists who received formal training and displayed
their work in juried exhibitions are included, providing valuable
insight to those pursuing and purchasing the genre.
