About the
Authors
John and Deborah Powers are independent
scholars and collectors of early Texas paintings.
They reside in Austin.
John was reared in Fort Worth and
Lubbock, and holds business and law degrees from the University of Texas at
Austin. In 2003 he retired from a
legal career spanning more than thirty-five years, the last two decades as a
judge on the Texas Court of Appeals. He
retired in the grade of captain from the U. S. Naval Reserve in 1994 after
twenty-two years of service. His previous writings have appeared in legal
journals and include a book on administrative law.
He is the author of The
First Texas Navy, published in 2006.
Deborah Powers, a retired certified public
accountant, was born in New York City. She
grew up in the military and attended French-speaking schools in Switzerland and
Laos before moving to San Antonio. A
graduate of the University of Texas with a degree in French and Asian Studies,
and later accounting, she was the first administrator for the State of Texas
401(k) plan, and afterward a supervising state auditor.
She is the author of a legal history, The
Court of Appeals at Austin, 1892-1992, published in 1992 by State House
Press.
